Pianoforte (B.Mus.)

Course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Music
Regular course length: 8 semesters

There is a long tradition of fine, broadly based piano tuition at the HMTMH. The University’s greatest assets in this respect are an outstanding faculty of worldwide renown and excellent facilities for students.
The new Bachelor’s degree course in Pianoforte, which is being introduced in the Winter Semester 2009/2010, unites the old “Music teaching” and “Musical performance” courses in a “Y” model. Nothing will change with regard to the outstanding quality of the individual and group tuition. 2010, a post-graduate Master’s degree course will be introduced, as will a third tier of study for those who have already obtained a Master’s degree.
Further information on the courses available can initially be obtained from the Registration Office (Immatrikulationsamt) or from the Pianoforte tutors (see column on the right).

  1. Course content and objective / Tuition
In addition to tuition in the principal study subject, the curriculum also includes traditional subsidiary subjects such as Music theory, Aural training, Musicology, Education etc. One essential component of the course is Chamber music. In addition, the course is complemented by many useful areas of practically orientated activity.
The programme aims to enable all students to emerge from the course as comprehensively trained personalities at the piano, who will be able to hold their own successfully in their profession despite the changing face of the world of music.
At the beginning of the course, all students will be taught together in all subjects; from the fourth semester onwards they will divide into the two continuing branches of the Y model: one more educationally orientated branch and one concerned entirely with artistic performance. The aim of this model is to allow every student to receive very largely individual support in accordance with his or her particular needs.
  2. Who is the course aimed at? / Requirements for admission
In the entrance examination, the young pianists are expected to present a well-prepared programme, and to already possess to a largely recognisable extent the basic traits of an artistic or teaching personality who will be able to meet the high demands made on a professional pianist or piano teacher.
  3. Career outlook
Pianists today often no longer work only as concert soloists or in chamber music, but are also involved in music education. Management abilities are called for, as is also imagination in the forming of the musical world of tomorrow.

Institute/Faculty
Future students will form the Pianoforte group. In addition to tuition in the principal study subject, a wide variety of additional areas are on offer, which together make up a practically orientated and broadly based course of piano training:

  • Tuition in chamber music
  • Tuition in song accompaniment
  • Tuition in piano duet
  • Tuition in Early Music; in addition to various harpsichords and clavichords, there is also a collection of historic upright and grand pianos from the period 1790 to 1910 available (originals and copies)
  • Special offerings in the field of New Music for pianoforte
  • International master classes extending the range of tuition available

There are numerous opportunities to perform, both within and outside the University. There are also internal competitions, scholarships and other forms of assitance.
