Prof. Norma Enns

Chairperson of the Voice Department

• born in Canada, grew up on a grain farm,
• studied sacred music (diploma), then piano pedagogy  (A.M.M.), viola and voice attaining a double major B. Mus. Hons. degree.  
• First professional experience as violist, conductor of a school orchestra, teacher and accompanist while continuing voice lessons. 
• In 1973 she moved to Hannover, Germany for further study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover, where she was awarded the opera diploma in 1977 and the concert diploma 1978.

Since then she has been active as concert singer singing mainly oratorio, Lied and music of the 20th century, working together with many ensembles, theatres and composers.  Numerous works were commissioned for her, she sang premiere and first performances, recorded CDs, especially with Ensemble L’art pout l’art (Hamburg), she made many radio and TV recordings with major European and international producers.

Her teaching experience began in a private studio beginning in 1977. She has taught singing and contemporary music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover since 1987, first as part-time lecturer 1987-94, when she was named Professor. She is currently Chairperson of the Voice Department.  
She is internationally in demand for master classes and lectures. From 2000 – 2006, she was Vice-President of the Bundesverband Deutscher Gesangspädagogen and she has been President of the European Voice Teachers Association since 2004.
