• Studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart with Luisa Bosabalian, Konrad Richter und Klaus Nagora,  and at the  Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt a. M. with Elsa Cavelti, Hartmut Höll and Bernhard Kontarski.

• After completing her state examination for teaching in secondary schools, she also completed her Concert and Opera Diplomas as well as the Solo Artists’ Diploma

• From 1989 to 1997 she was engaged as lyric mezzosoprano at the Aalto-Theatre in Essen. She appeared as guest soloist as well at opera houses Berlin, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen, Hannover, Kassel, Kiel, Toulouse, St. Gallen, Stuttgart, Weimar, Wiesbaden and many more, singing roles such as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Niklaus in Hoffmann´s Erzählungen oder auch die Frau in Schönberg’s Erwartung.

• In April 1997, she accepted a position as Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg. She was Direktor of the Institut für Musikpädagogik from 2003-2007.

• Marina Sandel was called to a professorship for Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the HMTH in beginning with the winter semester 2007/2008, where she heads the Voice Pedagogy department, lectures and conducts seminars as well as maintaining a class of voice majors.

She has also gained a reputation as Lied and oratorio soloist, having been invited to perform across Europe and in Israel and the USA.  She has sung at various festivals among them the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Händelfestspiele Halle,  Braunschweiger Musikpodium or the Salzburger Festspiele. Her standard repertoire includes darmatized recital programmes as well as the standard oratorio repertoireand more recently, has been extended by works such as Mahler’s VIII. Sinfonie, and the Requiem settings by Dvorak and Verdi.

Her students can be heard at many theatres and festivals among them Bremen, Halle, Kassel, Neustrelitz-Neubrandenburg, Linz, Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, Würzburg, the Händelfestspiele Halle, the Musikalische Komödie Leipzig, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg, Junge Oper Stuttgart.


Frau Sandel concertizes regularly and is internationally in demand as a Master Class teacher, in university commissions and as a consultant and appraiser. Sie has published numerous articles on performance practise, pedagogy and professional life.

She has been Vice-President of the Bundesverband Deutscher Gesangspädagogen (BDG) since 2005.   In September 2007 she was named to the Cultural Senate of the province of Sachsen-Anhalt.
