Chamber Music (Master of Music)Pianoforte | Ensemble | Lied interpretation

Course leading to the degree of Master of Music
Regular course length: 4 semesters

Options:

  • Pianoforte (for pianists not belonging to a fixed ensemble)
  • Ensemble (piano trio, piano quartet and string quartet)
  • Lied interpretation (for singers, pianists or fixed duets)

Young ensembles, pianists and singers can spend two years at the University of Music, Drama and Media in Hanover intensively preparing for a career in chamber music or song.

Three professors supervise the chamber music work as part of the study: Oliver Wille with a focus on string quartet, Jan Philip Schulze in the subject song, Markus Becker for piano. The activities meet in the lively Institute for Chamber Music – here the contents of the study, the projects, excursions and the chamber music public image of the university are designed, discussed and organized.

Diverse opportunities to give a concert are offered by the institute´s cooperation with relevant festivals and concert promoters, the university´s numerous events, e.g., its chamber music and song festivals, and finally the regular repertoire examination “Future Masters” at the end of the semester.

1. Study Content
Next to the artistic major class, students can choose from HMTMH´s rich offer of theoretical and practical subsidiary subjects. They can sharpen their own profile and professionalizing themselves for their artistic career, including

  • Introduction to string and wind instrument techniques for pianists
  • Conducting
  • Singer specific piano music
  • Opera correpetition
  • Speech training for singers and pianists
  • Lessons on historical keyboard instruments
  • Contemporary instrumental and vocal techniques
  • Interpretation analysis
  • Management, marketing-seminars with personalities of the music life about the situation of the “music market” and career opportunities.
  • Artistic workshops and interdisciplinary projects offer inspiring encounters with composers and performers.

For fixed ensembles, like string quartet and piano trio, regular subsidiary subjects are not part of the master´s degree. This allows the possibility of individual teaching units.

The final examination is divided into three parts and consists of an interview concert, a CD-recording with a written concept (e.g., own booklet) and a big final evening.

2. Professional Perspective
Today, an independent artistic-personal profile, interesting repertoire and strong communication skills are crucial for success - regardless of whether chamber music and concert activities themselves, pedagogical work, an orchestral profession or a solo career are at the end of the line.

Since the founding of the master´s degree in chamber music many of our graduates have successfully established themselves internationally in professional life - with their ensembles, as soloists, in orchestras, teaching or correpeting.

Programme learning outcomes

The Master's Degree in Chamber Music prepares students in the best possible way for a working life in a changing professional field. The goal of the master's program is to enable students to take up and independently pursue a qualified occupation with their skills in the field of ensemble playing/song, for example:

  • As a member of a permanent ensemble;
  • As a freelance instrumentalist or singer in changing formations;
  • As a répétiteur at a university or theater;
  • As an instrumental or vocal teacher.

The central objective of the program is the development of independent and discerning artistic personalities. This includes, in the main subject individually, the acquisition of a healthy playing technique at a professional level, the development of one's own conception of sound as well as the orientation towards an interpretation ideal that is open to the peculiarity of the respective work of art and seeks to understand it from its historical and stylistic context. Equally important are the chamber music aspects of playing together, the common search for interpretative and technical solutions, i.e. the verbal and artistic communication within the ensemble.

Artistic activity takes place predominantly in the freelance sector. In addition to excellent artistic qualifications, this requires a high degree of flexibility and the ability to organize and promote oneself. In addition to the other theoretical and practical subsidiary subjects, students are therefore introduced to this area with special offers.
