FAQ for refugee students from Ukraine
Can I enrole directly at HMTMH?
Refugee students can apply for the winter semester (start: 1 October) as short-term guest students. This means that you can take examinations, but you cannot obtain a degree with this status.
Please apply to the Enrolment Office and send us a CV, certificates (if available) and video links.
You can then apply for a regular place at the university for the winter semester 2023/24 or transfer to another university. The examinations you have taken will be taken into account.
How can I apply for a regular place at HMTMH?
A regular application is possible for the winter semester 2023/24. The application period begins in February 2023.
Exception Acting: Here, the application phase for the summer semester 2023 begins on September 14, 2022 and ends on November 13, 2022.
You can also apply from the short-term guest programme: If you wish to transfer from the short-term guest study to the regular study programme, you must pass the entrance examination before being admitted. Your guest studies are not a substitute for the entrance examination.
I have already studied at a college/university in Ukraine. Will my previous academic achievements be recognised?
If you apply regularly to the HMTMH for the winter semester 2023/24 and pass the entrance examination (-> How can I apply regularly to the HMTMH for a degree course?) your previous achievements will be examined by the faculty of the respective subject group. You will then be placed in a higher semester, according to your performance level.
I am unable to prepare and apply by the deadline or have failed the entrance examination at the first attempt. Can I still study at HMTMH and receive teaching and training?
Refugee students can apply as short-term guest students without taking an entrance exam. This means that you can practise and participate in classes at HMTMH for up to 2 semesters. You can also take exams.
You cannot obtain a degree with this status. However, you can apply next year (for the winter semester 2023/24) and would be invited to take the entrance examination if you are qualified.
Please contact the Enrolment Office with an application and send us a CV, certificates (if available) and video links.
Do I need to know German to study at HMTMH?
For short-term guest studies, you do not initially need to provide proof of German, although knowledge of German is highly recommended.
If you wish to study (further) at HMTMH on a regular basis, you must provide proof of German at level B2. However, upon request, you can submit this proof 6 months after enrolment.
Does HMTMH have its own facilities for accommodating Ukrainian refugee students?
HMTMH does not have its own accommodation facilities. In the short term, accommodation can be organised in individual cases through the HMTMH University Support Association. Please contact the International Office for this. The Studentenwerk Hannover also offers housing support.
Where can I get financial help?
Students have the option of receiving support from the HMTMH University Support Association. Please contact the International Office for this.
The Studentenwerk Hannover also offers support.
If you were in Ukraine when the war broke out and fled the country, your status as a war refugee entitles you to social benefits in Germany. This includes costs for education. In addition, you are allowed to register as a job seeker and apply for scholarships. You can find an overview of general funding for Ukrainian students on the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
