The Master’s degree course for the “Higher Secondary Teaching Qualification” enables students to acquire artistic performance, academic, music teaching and educational knowledge and skills that will prepare them for admission to trainee teacher status in preparation for teaching music at a higher secondary school (Gymnasium).
The four-semester course is offered at the HMTMH in collaboration with the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH). Successful completion of the degree course is a requirement for acceptance as a trainee teacher. In this Master’s degree course, particular emphasis is laid upon the extraordinarily broad range offered in Hannover in the field of musicology, and upon music education.

1. Course content and objective
   The major focuses of this course of study at the HMTMH are on historical and systematic musicology and on musical ethnology and education, the latter being considered as a link to real-life practice in schools. Particularly important features are the placements, for which intensive support and evaluation are provided. In addition, in the so-called “in-depth study subject” music-related experience is applied to the theory and teaching methodology of music education.
   The Master’s degree course for the Music teaching qualification at higher secondary schools is broken down into:
   - a major subject at the HMTMH
   - a second subject at the LUH
   - the educational science study at the LUH
   - the Master’s degree thesis

 

2. Who is the course aimed at?
   The course of study is directed towards students who have completed either the Joint Bachelor’s degree course at the HMTMH or a Bachelor’s degree for higher secondary music teachers at other academies of music or universities. 3. Career outlook
   The Master’s degree course provides a qualification for teaching at German higher secondary schools (Gymnasien), and is required for acceptance as a trainee teacher.
