Outgoing students
What are the requirements?
The following requirements apply for an ERASMUS+ study exchange:
- Duration: 3-12 months (90-360 days) per study cycle (Bachelor/Master/PhD), repeated funding possible
- Host university: it must be a partner university of HMTMH or have an ERASMUS Charter (ECHE)
- The following countries participate in the ERASMUS+ programme: All EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Turkey as well as the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
- Switzerland has been offering its own mobility programme (Swiss European Mobility Programme) since the winter semester 2014/15
The following requirements apply to ERASMUS+ internships:
- Duration: 2-12 months during and after studies in another European country (also multiple times)
- Internships within one year of completing a study phase (graduate internships), if the application was submitted within the last year of the study phase
- Teaching assistantships are funded as internships
What language skills do I need?
An interest in the respective language and culture is also part of a stay abroad. It is an advantage to attend a language course at home so that you have a basic knowledge of the language when you arrive. Courses are offered in Hanover for many languages (e.g. the Technical Language Centre at Leibniz Universität Hannover). Some universities also have certain language requirements (usually B1), which must be proven with the application.
Please enquire at the IO about language courses and, if applicable, their reimbursement.
In preparation and in order to keep track of your own language progress, it is advisable to take a language test before and after your stay abroad. You can register here for the OLS online language test.
Students accepted at a host university may be able to take online language courses free of charge via the EU/ERASMUS language learning portal EU Academy (OLS) kostenfrei Onlinesprachkurse belegen.
How will I be supported?
Apart from the waived tuition fees at the host university, you will receive a monthly scholarship from EU funding, which is paid to HMTMH via the DAAD.
The amount of the scholarship may vary slightly from year to year, as it depends on the number of scholarship holders. In addition, the financial support for ERASMUS+ student stays is based on the different costs of living in the target countries (programme countries). From the academic year 2022/23, the following monthly funding rates for the respective country groups will apply as guidelines for study visits (SMS):
Group 1 (600 euros per month): Belgium, Denmark, (Germany), Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg. Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden, partner countries from regions 13 (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City State) and 14 (Faroe Islands, Switzerland, United Kingdom).
Group 2 (540 euros per month): Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Cyprus.
Group 3 (540 euros per month): Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Hungary.
ERASMUS+ trainees receive an additional 100 euros per month.
Auslandsbafög can be received in parallel to the ERASMUS scholarship, however, if the ERASMUS grant amounts to 300 euros/month or more, the excess amount will be deducted/credited from the Bafög rate. Please note that the scholarship is only a grant and cannot cover the full costs of a stay abroad. Before applying, consider whether you can finance your stay. Most European cities have a higher cost of living than Hanover!
What do I need to consider when applying?
You should consider the following things and questions:
- can I afford a stay abroad?
- when is the best time for a stay abroad?
- am I sufficiently insured? (Information on DAAD insurance can be found in the downloads)
- How can I find accommodation?
- Can I get a study abroad grant?
- Will my achievements from abroad be recognised?
The International Office will be happy to advise you on these topics.
