Prof. Paul Weigold

Paul Weigold studied bassoon with Klaus Thunemann and conducting with Lutz Köhler and Wolf-Dieter Hauschild.  Upon completion of his studies, he was engaged by the Stadttheater Würzburg and at the Staatsoper in Hamburg as vocal coach and conductor.  He was invited to conduct the Munich premiere of the opera The Mother of Black Winged Dreams by the Polish composer, Hanna Kulenty. In 1997 he was named head conductor and artistic director of the Kammeroper in Vienna.

Four years later in 2001, Paul Weigold was called to the Vienna State Opera as head coach and assistant to the musical director, Seiji Ozawa. From 2002-2004 he assisted Valery Gergiev and Donald Runnicles at the Salzburg Festspiele.

Furthermore, many years of artistic collaboration with Semyon Bychkov resulted not only in invitations to conduct performances at large opera houses such as the Opera Bastille in Paris or the Teatro Regio in Turin, but also to assume an advisory capacity for numerous CD recordings (Lohengrin, Verdi’s Requiem, Elektra, Daphne). This partnership will continue in 2010 with Tannhäuser in Torino and 2011 with Elektra in Madrid.

Paul Weigold was called to a professorship at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover in 2006.  There he recently conducted a successful production of W. A. Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He conducted Verdi’s Falstaff at the Korean National University in 2008. Mr. Weigold was named Guest Professor at the Seoul Art College (2009) and teaches regular conducting courses at the Universität der Künste Berlin.  In addition, he has worked with the orchestras of the Wiener Staatsoper, Opera Bastille, Teatro Regio Turin, Wiener Volksoper, the Symphony Orchestra of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk and the Komische Oper Berlin.  He also coached a recent production of Wozzeck at the Bolschoi Theater in Moscow.
