Examinations
How do I register for an examination correctly? Can I have credits earned abroad recognised? And when is the latest I have to complete my studies?
On this page, you will find explanations of the most important questions relating to examinations in the bachelor's and master's programmes at HMTMH.
- Most of the information also applies to the interdisciplinary Bachelor's programmes and the teacher training programmes offered in cooperation with Leibniz University Hannover. Any deviating regulations are indicated separately.
- Further information on deviations and special features of the Bachelor's and Master's programmes offered by the Institute for Journalism and Communication Research (IJK) can be found here.
Please note: New framework study and examination regulations came into force at the start of the 2025/26 winter semester. The most important changes compared to the previous regulations can be found in an information sheet. This is primarily aimed at students who began their current course of study before the 2025/26 winter semester.
Regulations and forms
Cross-programme regulations for HMTMH bachelor's and master's programmes can be found in the corresponding framework study and examination regulations:
- Framework study and examination regulations for bachelor's programmes (RSPO-B) [English translation]
Please note: in case of any inconsistencies between the German regulations and the translations, only the German regulations are binding.
These apply in conjunction with the relevant programme-specific study and examination regulations (SPO).
The relevant programme-specific regulations and module handbooks for all programmes can be found on the website of your programme. Programme-related documents and forms for the individual examination offices are stored in the LMS.
For the interdisciplinary Bachelor's programme and the teacher training programmes offered in cooperation with Leibniz University Hannover, the regulations are set out in the general section of the current examination regulations in conjunction with the corresponding study regulations. The general examination regulations for these programmes can be found here:
- Common examinations regulations for the Interdisciplinary bachelor's degree programme (FüBA) [in German]
- Common examination regulations for the master's teacher training programme (MALG) [in German]
- Examination regulations for the bachelor's degree in Special Education [in German]
- Examination regulations for the master's degree in Special Education [in German]
Registration
Exams can be registered during the following periods by submitting a ticket via the Service Desk:
- Winter semester: 1 October to 15 November
- Summer semester: 1 April to 15 May
For practical examinations, assignments and oral examinations, topics and dates are agreed directly between students and examiners. Please contact them in good time. If already known, the date, time and location of the examination as well as the names of the examiners must be specified when registering for the examination. Information on registration can be found directly at the Service Desk. A separate ticket must be created for each examination.
The following exceptions apply:
- Students studying to become special education teachers must register for examinations at Leibniz University Hannover.
- Different deadlines and regulations apply to the IJK.
Please note:
- An examination that has been passed but not registered with the examination offices by the deadline is invalid.
- No examinations are possible during a semester of leave.
Participation requirements
- Enrolment and re-registration
- Where applicable, fulfilment of requirements in accordance with module descriptions (or, in the case of interdisciplinary Bachelor's programmes and teacher training programmes, the subject-specific annexes to the examination regulations)
- In justified cases, examiners may require proof of prior achievement for the examination subject before assigning a topic or date.
Examination period
- usually in the last two weeks before the end of lectures:
Summer semester -> July
Winter semester -> February - Deviations are possible in justified cases by agreement between the examiner and the student. The examination times must be notified in writing to the responsible examination office, stating the reasons.
- Different dates for repeat examinations are possible (see section ‘Repeating examinations’).
Withdrawal from examinations
[see RSPO §20]
Withdrawal is possible up to 14 days before the examination date without giving reasons.
- Within the registration period, withdrawal must be done via the Service Desk.
- After that, withdrawal must be done by email to the Examination Office, with you informing the examiners if you have already made further arrangements with them.
- Please note: This does not apply to repeat examinations, for which valid reasons must be given!
Withdrawal after the 14-day period has expired is only possible for valid reasons, e.g.
- Illness (medical certificate to be submitted to the Examination Office within 3 days)
- Care of relatives
- Death in the family
- Short-term internship
- Participation in a competition
If you withdraw after the examination has begun, the examination is considered failed.
An extension of the submission deadline for written work is possible.
- There must be a valid reason for an extension.
- An extension must be requested from the programme director via the Examination Office.
Different deadlines and regulations apply to the interdisciplinary Bachelor's programme and the teacher training programmes offered in cooperation with Leibniz University Hannover.
Recording of achievements
- Examination achievements: Teaching staff submit the grades to the examination offices using the forms provided for this purpose.
- In the case of group lessons and courses with study achievements, students have their participation and, if applicable, the completion of further study achievements certified by the teaching staff on the forms provided and submit these to the examination offices at the latest after completing the examination. Examiners may require prior proof of academic achievement and/or attendance requirements as a condition for assigning topics and/or dates for examinations.
- Achievement ‘Participation in individual lessons’: A separate certificate of participation by the students from the teachers is not required. The entries in the examination files are made on the basis of the allocation by the I-Office and the teaching load lists of the Human Resources Department. Changes or deviations from the allocation must be reported in writing by teachers and/or students.
Repeating examinations
[see RSPO §17]
In the event of failing examinations, the following applies:
- Final theses and final concerts can only be repeated once.
- All other examinations can be repeated twice.
- For term papers, there is the option of revision.
- In the case of composite module examinations, only failed partial examinations must be repeated.
- In the event of final failure, de-registration will take place.
Make-up dates usually take place before the end of the second week of lectures in the following semester, but no earlier than four weeks after the examination date. Dates are to be determined in consultation with the examiners.
If you attend the course again prior to the resit, you must register for the examinations in the next regular examination period in the usual manner.
It is not possible to repeat an examination in order to improve a grade.
Different regulations apply to the interdisciplinary Bachelor's programme and the teacher training programmes offered in cooperation with LUH; these can be found in the respective regulations.
Crediting and recognition of achievements
The crediting of professional achievements and periods of study as well as study and examination achievements at other universities is possible upon application in accordance with RSPO §12.
- Corresponding applications must be submitted to the programme spokesperson and to the Examination Office by 31 December of the first year of study at the latest.
- Applications are usually submitted during enrolment via the MUVAC application platform.
- The application must be accompanied by overviews of the study and performance records acquired to date.
- In the event of a change of university or degree programme, a double degree or a second degree, there is a mandatory consultation with the degree programme director at the beginning of the degree programme to discuss the possibilities for recognition. The recognition assessment covers both group and individual tuition from previous periods of study.
- Applications for the recognition of academic achievements and examinations completed during studies at other universities, e.g. abroad, must be submitted within three months.
For the interdisciplinary Bachelor's programme and the teacher training programmes offered in cooperation with Leibniz University Hannover, different deadlines apply, which are laid down in §10 of the general section of the examination regulations.
Study progress monitoring and final examination monitoring
The framework study and examination regulations as well as the regulations for the interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree stipulate deadlines for the completion of study and examination requirements in the sense of study progress and degree completion monitoring.
The deadlines for RSPO degree programmes are set out in §25 as follows:
- Eight-semester Bachelor's degrees with the degree B. Mus.
- The intermediate examination (courses in the first four semesters) should be passed after 6 semesters. It is possible to apply for an extension of up to two additional semesters. The maximum duration of study until the intermediate examination is therefore 8 semesters.
- The degree should be completed after 10 semesters. It is possible to apply for an extension of up to 2 additional semesters. The maximum duration of study until the final examination is therefore 12 semesters.
- Six-semester Bachelor's degrees with the degree B.A.
- After 4 semesters, at least 60 credit points must be demonstrated. It is possible to apply for an extension of this period by a maximum of 2 additional semesters.
- The degree should be completed within 9 semesters. It is possible to apply for an extension of one additional semester. The possible duration of study until graduation is thus a maximum of 10 semesters.
- Master's programmes leading to an MA or M.Mus. degree
- Proof of achievement for the first two semesters must be provided after four semesters.
- The degree must be completed within twice the standard period of study.
- An extension of these deadlines is only possible if students are not responsible for the failure to achieve the required performance.
Only subject semesters are counted, i.e. not semesters of leave. In the case of part-time studies, the deadlines are converted to the extended standard period of study and extended accordingly.
Applications for deadline extensions for study progress and graduation checks
The following regulations apply to degree programmes that are subject to the RSPOs:
- Applications for deadline extensions for study progress and final examination checks must be submitted to the degree programme spokespersons via the relevant examination office.
- As a rule, applications must be submitted at least four months before the expected expiry of the deadline (end of May or end of November).
- Approval is subject to a mandatory consultation with the programme spokesperson or another person appointed by the programme spokesperson.
If the deadlines are not met after any extensions have been granted and the required work has not been completed, the degree programmes are considered failed. De-registration follows on the basis of a case-by-case review. Students are given the opportunity to comment prior to de-registration.
Transitional arrangements
- For students in HMTMH degree programmes who are subject to the RSPO regulations and who enrolled for the first time before the 2025/2026 winter semester, a transitional period of four semesters applies for the purpose of protecting legitimate expectations and without the need to submit a separate application for the completion of the study progress or final assessment in all degree programmes (see §30 RSPO).
Different deadlines and procedures
- Eight-semester interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree (B.A.)
- The intermediate examination (courses from the first two semesters) is scheduled to take place after four semesters at the latest.
- Extensions to the deadline for providing evidence of the intermediate examination are only possible in special cases. Applications for this must be submitted to the relevant examination board via the Examination Office (information available in the LMS and from the Examination Office).
- There are no deadlines for completing the interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree, but counselling sessions with the relevant Examination Office and the programme spokesperson can be arranged for long-term students.
Compensation for disadvantages
Compensation for disadvantages
Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses may be granted compensation for disadvantages in examinations. Applications must be agreed with the programme directors and submitted to the Examinations Office.
The following may be taken into account:
- the need for special aids or assistance services,
- the effects of a disability on the course of study and examinations, which may extend the duration of study,
- the completion of coursework and examinations in a form other than that intended.
This does not affect the academic requirements for coursework and examinations. Further details are regulated by the RSPO (§22) or (for interdisciplinary Bachelor's programmes and teacher training programmes) §16 in the general section of the respective examination regulations.
The application form for disadvantage compensation can be found here.
An information sheet on the application for disadvantage compensation can be found here.
