Examinations
How do I register correctly for an exam? Can I get credit for academic achievements from abroad? And how often can a failed examination actually be retaken?
The following explanations refer to examinations in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at HMTMH. Equivalent information on the degree programmes at the Institute of Journalism and Communication Research (IJK) can be found here.
For the interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree programme First Subject Music and the Master's degree programme Higher secondary school teaching qualification First Subject Music, the conditions of the general part of the respective current examination regulations apply in conjunction with the current study regulations, see § 2 in conjunction with §§ 8, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 16 of the current examination regulations.
The necessary forms, such as withdrawal, registration for examinations, extensions of processing times, etc. can be found in LMS under the respective degree programme.
Regulations and forms
- Study and examination regulations (SPO) can be found under the respective degree programme on the page Study programmes
- Module catalogues are included in the respective SPOs as an attachment
- Forms of the individual examination offices see LMS -> My studies: Regulations - Forms - Deadlines
Application deadlines
- Summer semester: 01-15 May / registration form to be sent to the relevant examination office
- Winter semester: 01-15 November / registration form to be sent to the relevant examination office
- For practical examinations, term papers and oral examinations, topics and dates are agreed directly between students and examiners. Please contact them independently before registering and then inform the Examination Office of the date, time and location of the examination. The examiners must be named on the registration form.
Please note:A ‘passed’ examination that has not been registered with the Examinations Office by the deadline is invalid!
No examinations are possible during a semester of leave!
Participation requirements
Withdrawal from examinations
[see SPO / General Section §15]
Cancellation up to 14 days before the examination date is possible without giving reasons
- in writing to the examination office
- with informing the examiners
- Please note: Does not apply to re-examinations, for which valid reasons must be given!
Cancellation after the 14-day deadline is only possible for valid reasons, e.g.
- Illness (certificate to the examination office within 3 days)
- Care of relatives
- Death within the family
- Internship at short notice
- Participation in a competition
If you withdraw after the start of the examination, the examination is deemed to have been failed.
An extension of the submission deadline is possible.
- Prerequisite: valid reason
- Application via the examination office to the head of degree programme
Repetition of examinations
[see SPO / General Section §17]
The following applies if examinations are failed:
- Final papers and final concerts can only be repeated once.
- all other examinations can be repeated twice.
- in the case of composite module examinations, only failed partial examinations must be repeated.
- In the event of final failure: Exmatriculation!
Retake date: usually before the end of the 2nd week of lectures of the following semester, but at the earliest 4 weeks after the examination date.
If a course is repeated, the examination is repeated at the end of the following semester, provided the course is not linked to WS/SoSe.
It is not possible to repeat an examination to improve a grade.
Disadvantage compensation
Students with disabilities and chronic illnesses may be granted compensation for disadvantages during examinations. Applications must be coordinated with the head of the degree programme and submitted to the Examination Office.
The following can be considered:
- the need for special aids or assistance
- impacts of an impairment on the duration of study in the course of study and examination regulations
- the completion of coursework and examinations in a form of organisation different from the one intended
The subject-specific requirements for coursework and examinations are not affected by this. Further details are regulated by the study and examination regulations (§ 29).
The application for compensation for disadvantages can be found here.
An information sheet on the application for compensation for disadvantages can be found here.

Crediting and recognition of achievements
[see SPO / General Section §5]
The following is possible upon application
- the recognition of practical work experience
- the recognition of periods of study as well as study and examination achievements at other universities
The application must be submitted to the Examination Office by 31 December at the latest after commencement of studies. Recognition at a later date is not possible.
Applications for the recognition of coursework and examinations completed during the degree programme at other universities, e.g. abroad, must be submitted within three months.
In the case of a change of university or degree programme or a double degree programme, a binding consultation with the head of the degree programme should take place at the beginning of the degree programme.
Progress review and interim examination
- After each semester, have your teachers confirm your participation in lessons, courses and projects on your transcript of records. Please forward your proof of prior learning to the Examination Office without being asked. If no proof of prior learning is provided, a module is deemed not to have been completed even if the examination has been passed (no full points).
- For eight-semester degree programmes, the modules in the study plan for the first four semesters count as intermediate examinations.
- The progress of the degree programme is regularly checked by the examination offices. In the event of anomalies, the main subject teacher and the head of the degree programme will be informed and may invite you to a counselling meeting.
- Current performance levels are in the student's interest and can be requested when applying for scholarships or from state authorities (e.g. when applying for BAföG or extending residence permits).
