Prof. Sybille Meier

Professor of dramaturgy

Sybille Meier was born in 1971 near Freiburg in Breisgau. Graduated in German Language and Literature and Classical Philology from Heidelberg University. She held a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation.

First engagement as a dramaturge in 1999 at the Theater an der Ruhr by the artistic director Robert Ciulli. In 2001, she moved to the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus under the artistic leadership of Anna Badora. From there, she was hired in 2007 as a dramaturge at the Schauspiel Köln for the new artistic direction of Karin Beier. Together with her, she moved to the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg in 2013, where she took over as head of dramaturgy in the 2023/24 season.

For the series ‘ANTHROPOLIS I-V’ of Roland Schimmelpfennig, she was awarded 2024 ‘Dramaturge of the Year’ in the critics’ vote of the journal ‘Theater heute’. For many years, she has worked continuously with theatre directors Karin Beier, SIGNA, Katie Mitchell, Karin Henkel, René Pollesch and Viktor Bodó. She has been invited to the Theatertreffen in Berlin nine times with theatre productions.

In addition to her work as a dramaturge, she has been teaching at academic and artistic universities for over 15 years, including the Institute for Media Culture and Theatre at the University of Cologne, the Zurich University of the Arts, the University of Music, Drama and Media Hanover, the University of Hamburg and the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, where she last held the position of interim professor of dramaturgy.

Since April 1, 2026, she is a professor of dramaturgy in the Department of Drama at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media.
