Prof. Paul Weigold

Professor of Conducting

Paul Weigold studied bassoon with Klaus Thunemann and conducting with Lutz Köhler and Wolf-Dieter Hauschild.

After first engagements at the Stadttheater Würzburg and the Hamburgische Staatsoper he went to the Vienna Kammeroper, where he was conductor and artistic director from 1997-2001. In 2001 Paul Weigold was called to the Vienna State Opera for the position as Head of the music staff. At the Vienna State Opera he worked with singers like Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Edita Gruberova, Anna Netrebko, Agnes Baltsa, Elina Garanca, Thomas Hampson and many others.

From 2002-2004 Paul Weigold was responsible for the musical preparation of „Turandot“, „Don Carlos“ and „Die tote Stadt“ at the Salzburg Festival. In the same position he worked on „Parsifal“ for the Bayreuth Festival in 2018 and 2019.

Furthermore many years of artistic collaboration with Maestro Semyon Bychkov resulted in invitations to conduct performances at important opera houses such as the Opera Bastille in Paris, Teatro Real in Madrid and Teatro Regio in Torino as well as in the participation of outstanding CD productions f. e. Wagner ́s „Lohengrin“, Strauss „Elektra“ and „Daphne“ or Verdi`s „Messa da Requiem“.

In 2006 Paul Weigold was appointed to a professorship at the HMTMH. He is in charge of the masters program for opera singers and a class for opera coaching.Under his baton very succesful opera productions of „Le nozze di Figaro“, „Cosi fan tutte“ and „Ariadne auf Naxos“ were realized. At the Korean National University of arts he conducted „Falstaff“ and „Die Fledermaus“. From 2017-2019 he was visiting professor at Hanyang university in Seoul, South Korea. Paul Weigold regularly holds masterclasses in China, South Korea and Singapur.
