The Alfred Koerppen Kompositionsstipendium honors the long and vibrant history of composition and new music at the University of Music, Drama and Media Hannover. In addition to Alfred Koerppen, whose memory this scholarship aims to preserve, renowned professors Helmut Lachenmann, Reinhard Febel, Nigel Osborne, Johannes Schöllhorn, Oliver Schneller, and Rebecca Saunders have shaped the appeal of studying composition in Hanover.

That history continues today through the activities of Incontri – Institut für neue Musik, the central hub for all contemporary music activities in the university, including the fmsbw electronic music studios, Ensemble Incontri, Forum Neue Musik, the ‘FOKUS auf’ guest lecture series, the ‘PODIUM für’ guest concert series, a partnership with the Klangbrücken Festival, a network of affiliated professors in contemporary music performance, and an annual Ensemble-in-Residence program funded as part of a generous grant from the Volkswagenstiftung.
