Prof. Pablo Santa Cruz

Professor for double bass

Pablo Santa Cruz was born in Mexico City in 1991 to a Guatemalan father and a Puerto Rican mother. He started learning the double bass at the Program for Youth Symphony Orchestras (POSJU) in Puerto Rico, before continuing his studies at the Escuela Libre de Música Ernesto Ramos Antonini. He went on to study at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. His teachers included Antonio García Araque, Duncan McTier, Janne Saksala and Esko Laine.

During his studies he also had the opportunity to learn from renowned double bassists such as Dorin Marc, Nabil Shehata and Matthew McDonald. He was also selected several times to participate in the 'Encuentro de Música y Academia de Santander', collaborating and performing with musicians such as Ana Chumachenko, Claudio Martínez-Mehner, Kolja Blacher, Latica Honda-Rosenberg, and Michaela Martin.

Following his time as a member of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, he held a temporary position with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra before joining the Konzerthausorchester Berlin as a permanent member in 2018. Alongside his work in the orchestra, he performs chamber music in various formats and has taught at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2019.

In the 2025/26 winter semester, he took up a professorship in double bass at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media.
