I look forward to welcoming you personally together with representatives of the student body and the academic administration. The introductory event for first-year students will take place on 6 October at 11 a.m. at Richard Jakoby Hall at Neues Haus 1 in Hanover.

On this page, we have compiled the most important first steps for a good start to your studies.

I wish you a successful start to your studies!

Yours sincerely,

To-dos for a successful start to your studies

GETTING READY

Pick up your HMTMH Card

Your HMTMH Card conveniently combines several important functions on one card. It is

  • a student ID card
  • a library card for the Hanover Online Library System (HOBSY)
  • a payment method for the cafeterias and cafés of the Hanover Student Services Organisation
  • a key for lockers and cloakroom cabinets (Technical Information Library TIB, University Sports Department)
  • a discount card.

New students at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Research will receive their HMTMH Card directly at the IJK, Expo Plaza 12. The issue period will be communicated separately.

All other first-year students can pick up their HMTMH Card at the Immatrikulationsamt (Enrolment Office, Loebensteinstraße 2, ground floor) from 15 September 2025.

If you have any problems with your HMTMH Card (e.g. loss), the ‘I-Amt’ will be happy to help you.

Change your password for HMTMH ID

You have received your login details for (almost) all HMTMH IT systems via MUVAC, consisting of your personal HMTMH ID and your initial password.

Please change your initial password via https://passwort.hmtm-hannover.de

Note: This page can only be accessed inside the HMTMH network or from public computers at HMTMH! If you have forgotten your password, please contact IT Support. Passwords will not be sent by email or telephone.

Getting familiar with online services

You will encounter certain IT systems repeatedly during your studies at HMTMH. It is therefore advisable to familiarise yourself with them as soon as possible:

The login details are the same for all these systems: make sure you remember your HMTMH ID and password

  • It's important to check your StudMail account regularly, as all official communication between the university and you will be sent to your student email address.

The IT support team provides further information and instructions on these applications in its FAQ section. If you encounter problems that cannot be solved this way, you can contact IT support via a ticket system or hotline.

Register for the library

The HMTMH University Library comprises

Once activated, students can simply use the HMTMH card as their library card. Registering online in advance speeds up the process. Afterwards, please come to the circulation desk of the Library in person and present your HMTMH card and your identity card (alternatively: HMTMH card + passport + registration confirmation/residence permit).

The HMTMH library is part of the Hanover Online Library System (HOBSY). If you are already registered at another library in the network, you are welcome to come directly to the circulation desk with your HOBSY user card.

After successful registration, a library account will be created for you in HOBSY.

Would you like more detailed information on a specific topic? Then theA-Z of the university library is a good first source of information! You are also welcome to contact the library team directly (see contact information).

News about the Central Library in german language can be found in the HMTMH-Bibl-Blog.

Booking rooms for practice and rehearsal

The ASIMUT room booking system can be used to book practice and rehearsal times throughout the university. The university-wide booking rules apply.

Log in at hmtm-hannover.asimut.net using your personal HMTMH ID.

If keys are required for certain rooms, these can be picked up and returend at the main entrance.

Instructions can be found in the HMTMH documentation wiki.

Prepare for mobile printing

Using the PaperCut print management software, you can submit print jobs throughout the university network from either a PC workstation or your mobile device. In the FAQ section of IT Support, you will find download and installation help for ‘Mobility Print’ (login required).

Printouts will only start after you have logged in to a device. To do this, simply identify yourself by holding your HMTMH card in front of the NFC symbol on the device.

For more information on ‘Printing/Printers at the Leisewitzstraße location’, we also recommend taking a look at the ‘A-Z’ section of the university library.

DEALING WITH FINANCIAL MATTERS

Contact statutory health insurance

Students at German universities are generally required to have health insurance with statutory health insurance institutions. Exemption is only possible if you have private health insurance or health insurance through subsidies.

Please request proof of your insurance status from a statutory health insurance provider. You may be asked for HMTMH's sender number, which is H000372. Your insurance status will then be transmitted directly to the HMTMH via an electronic procedure. You do not need to provide any further proof yourself!

If you have private insurance, please contact any statutory health insurance company. They will then take care of the electronic notification to the HMTMH.

Studentenwerk Hannover provides you with a summary on the topic of insurance.

Fund your studies

  • Studentenwerk Hannover has compiled comprehensive information on the topic of finances during your studies and, with its social counseling service, is an important point of contact for all your questions about study costs and financing. On their website, you will find everything you need to know about BAföG (a German state-funded financial aid programme for students) and study start-up assistance for first-year students from low-income families.
  • ‘Start ins Studium’ is the name of a scholarship relevant for first-year students from the steadily growing number of scholarships and awards for students at HMTMH. A list of all current offers provides information about the criteria and periods.
  • The HMTMH Circle of Friends and the Foundation for the HMTMH support the university, its students, projects and initiatives and award scholarships, prizes, grants and individual support (contact).
  • In the area of loans and credits, we would like to draw your attention in particular to interest-free loans offered by the General Student Committee (AStA) for students in financial need (application and contractual agreements).
  • Will you be financing your studies at least in part by jobbing and working part-time? Studentenwerk has compiled important information on this topic.
  • HMTMH offers a gig service. To be included in the agency's database, simply fill out the registration form and send it by email. The Events Department will contact you with enquiries that match your profile.
  • At the IJK, the practical colloquium offers an opportunity every winter semester to get to know companies where compulsory internships, voluntary internships or working student positions can be completed.

Take advantage of discounts

Hausmarke’ is a discount card for anyone studying at a university in Hanover and residing in the city or region. Numerous shops, service providers, pubs, restaurants, museums, theatres, dance schools and fitness centres offer discounts and attractive benefits. 'Hausmarke' is available at Hanover Tourist Information (Ernst-August-Platz 8). Simply download your Immatrikulationsbescheinigung (certificate of enrolment) and present it there in combination with your identity card!

In addition, the General Student Committee (AStA) in particular has negotiated attractive services for you:

  • HMTMH students can attend regular performances at the Lower Saxony State Theatre in Hanover free of charge. The cultural contribution for the so-called theatre flat rate is already included in the semester fee, so there are no additional costs for you! All you need to do is to register, which is free and non-binding (registration link in the ‘Preise und Ermäßigungen’ | ‘Ermäßigungen’ section).
  • The semester fee also includes discounts for cyclists: free tools at self-service workshops, discounted spare parts and free repairs are available at Pro Beruf and the Glocksee bicycle repair shop. HMTMH students can borrow a cargo bike from the AStA free of charge for up to three days.
  • The AStA provides information about discounts on studio and notation software, discounts on organic food at Lola's Loseladen, and free laptop rental and storage space in its flyer.

ORGANISING YOUR STUDENT LIFE

Get your semester ticket for public transport

The HMTMH semester fee includes a discounted Deutschlandticket. With this ticket, you can use public transport such as buses, trams, underground trains, etc., as well as regional trains such as RB, RE and S-Bahn trains throughout Germany.

The ticket is specially designed for mobile devices. After logging in once, it can be stored in your wallet and then used offline. Instructions and general and technical FAQs can be found on the website for the Deutschlandsemesterticket.

If you do not have a digital device, you can apply for a digital chip card from the General Student Committee (AStA). The AStA will also help with any problems and detailed questions.

Please note: The Deutschlandsemesterticket is only valid in conjunction with an official photo ID!

Finding a place to live

Studentenwerk Hannover is an important point of contact when it comes to moving. Places in dormitories are in high demand, so it is strongly recommended that you apply early! If you have not (yet) been able to secure a place, Studentenwerk can also give you valuable tips on where to look for accomodations or where you can stay at short notice.

If you would like to live close to the university, we particularly recommend the districts of Zoo, Südstadt, List/Oststadt, and Mitte. The Linden district is also particularly popular, with a lively alternative scene and many cafés, bars and cultural offerings.

For some rental apartments, you will need a certificate of eligibility for social housing, while for others you will have to pay a rental deposit. Remember to register with the Residents' Registration Office and don't forget the broadcasting licence fee (GEZ). Studentenwerk has compiled the most important tips about student housing for you.

And here's another tip: musicians don't always have it easy with neighbours and landlords. Membership in the German Tenants' Association in Hanover can be worthwhile!

Download the app for the canteen

The 'Mensa' (cafeteria and canteen) in the HMTMH main building at Neues Haus offers breakfast and hot lunches as well as snacks and beverages. It is operated by Studentenwerk Hannover. Another cafeteria, the ‘Große Pause’, is available at the Expo Plaza location. As a student, you are also entitled to use all other cafeterias operated by Studentenwerk.

Students receive the meals on offer at a reduced price. Payment is cashless using the HMTMH card or a debit card. You will also find a terminal for topping up your HMTMH card in the Mensa.

The current menu can be found online in the HMTMH Mensa menu or in the ‘Große Pause’ menu, as well as on the mobile app ‘Studi|Futter’ from the Studentenwerk. This can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store and Google Play.

Register for university sports

A healthy balance: University sports are available to all students and employees of Leibniz University Hannover and its partner universities (including HMTMH). Each semester, the Centre for University Sports organises an extensive sports programme with more than 800 courses in over 100 sports!

The programme for the winter semester will go online in September; the booking period begins approximately one week before the start of the semester – all dates will be announced online in good time (FAQ).

To participate, you must book the paid semester ticket (€12 for students), which allows you to attend courses from the basic programme (exclusively for students and employees) flexibly and without registration, and to book courses from the additional programme (open to external participants).

Bring your booking confirmation and your HMTMH card with you to the entrance check to speed up the process! You can also use your HMTMH card for the lockers and cloakroom cupboards on the SportCampus.

Hochschulsport Hannover operates the CAMPUSFit gym and the KletterCAMPUS climbing gym. These have their own cards, prices, and registration procedures.
